Flying by the Seat of Your Pants
By Renda Brumbeloe

Pilots love hangar talk. Some of my friends tell me they learned to fly by the seat of their pants in uncontrolled airspace where two-way radio communication was not required. Electronic navigation and other aviation inventions were not needed. These systems require a thorough understanding of the rules of flying.
There are rules and there are laws. The rules are made by men who think there is a better way to fly. They have invented systems that you must master. The laws of flying (physics) were made by God. You can, and sometimes should, suspend the rules of flying, but you cannot suspend the laws of flying.
It is important to know how to fly by the seat of your pants, but you could find yourself in a nosedive if you scorn the laws of physics. The laws of flying are always supreme to the invented rules of flying.
Following rules can either enhance or obscure the law. This is true in our spiritual lives as well. However, following rules can never make us spiritually right with God. We must delight in His law by day and by night.
Psalms 1:1 – “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” KJV
Man invents rules because he thinks he has found a better way. But God has put eternity in the hearts of mankind. His law is supremely higher than all the rules of man. We cannot hide behind the man-made rules.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 – “He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.” NASB
